Gas information sheet 39: Ring burners
Ring burners are considered to be portable LP Gas appliances. They shall be certified and shall display a certification mark from an Australian certification body.
A ring burner is described as being circular with one or more concentric rings of ports through which gas is combusted or square with one or more parallel sets of ports through which gas is combusted. Ring burners can weigh up to 20 kg.
Ring burners shall have:
- a gas control valve
- a hose and means to connect it to a gas cylinder
- pan supports for pots, pans, woks or frying pans.
As a portable gas appliance ring burners should only be used in outdoor locations.
Do not use your ring burner:
- if it is leaking gas – immediately turn off the cylinder valve
- remove the appliance to a well-ventilated location away from any ignition source
- test the appliance for gas leaks using soapy water
- do not try to detect leaks using a flame
- if it is damaged or does not operate properly
- if seals are damaged or worn – check that seals between the appliance and the gas cylinder are in place and in good condition before connecting the gas cylinder.
Never modify your ring burner. Only use the hose assembly supplied with the appliance for connection to the cylinder and do not use adaptors.
Only change over gas cylinders in a well-ventilated location, preferably outside and away from people and any sources of ignition, such as naked flames, pilot flames, electric heaters or other electrical equipment.
Operators should take note of the warnings provided with their ring burners, in particular:
- Carbon monoxide hazard — Using this appliance in an enclosed space may cause death. Do not use inside caravans, tents, marine craft, cars, mobile catering vehicles or in similar locations. Only use in well-ventilated areas.
- Caution: Accessible parts may be very hot. Keep young children away.
- It may be hazardous to attempt to fit other types of gas cylinders.
Ring burners are designed to operate with LP Gas (propane) only. Do not connect ring burners to natural gas or try to convert them to use any other type of gas.
Ring burners are designed for outdoor use only, and must be operated away from any combustible materials or surfaces.
- shall be placed on a non-combustible surface unless approved otherwise by the appliance manufacturer
- must be used on a stable, level, flat surface, protected from draughts and in a well-ventilated location
- should be used in an above ground, open air situations
- with natural ventilation
- without stagnant areas
- where any gas leakage is rapidly dispersed by wind and natural convection.
Prior to use
Set up your ring burner in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions.
Carry out the following checks:
- inspect the appliance for damage and wear
- leak test all connections with soapy water.
During operation your ring burner should:
- only be used as a cooking appliance
- only be used in a well-ventilated outdoor area
- never be left unattended
- never be handled, as all surfaces will be extremely hot.
Ring burners rely on open air and natural ventilation to disperse combustion products. They may produce carbon monoxide gas and therefore should only be used in well ventilated areas. They are designed for outdoor use so using this appliance in enclosed spaces may be dangerous to your health.
If you do use a ring burner in an enclosure such as a marquis or tent (either permanent or temporary), it is essential the enclosure complies with one of the following setups:
- an enclosure with walls on all sides, but without an overhead cover
- a partial enclosure that includes an overhead cover and no more than two walls.
Where the partial enclosure includes an overhead cover and more than two walls, the following shall apply:
- at least 25% of the total wall area is completely open or
- 30% or more in total of the remaining wall side, back and front wall areas is open and unrestricted
- in the case of balconies, 20% or more of the total wall area shall remain open and unrestricted.
Clearance distances to combustible surfaces
The clearance distance to combustible surfaces from the ring burner shall comply with the requirements of the appliance manufacturer, and be at least:
- a minimum of 1050 mm distance between the ring burner and an overhead combustible surface
- a minimum of 500 mm distance is recommended between the ring burner and the sides or back of the fabric of a marquee or tent wall
- a minimum of 250 mm distance between a ring burner and the sides or back of a combustible surface.
Care and maintenance
Always clean your ring burner after use with warm, soapy water and wipe down all surfaces taking care not to allow water to enter the burner ports or aeration holes in the burner tube.
Do not submerge the ring burner in water when washing or use abrasive cleaners or bleach. Burner ports can be cleaned with compressed air or pipe cleaners.
Ring burners should be serviced by an authorised service agent at service intervals as specified by the manufacturer or more often if required.
Ring burners shall be stored in a dry and well ventilated location. Never store the ring burner while it is still connected to the gas cylinder.
