Gas information sheet 08: Appliance conversion

View as PDF.

It is the policy of Energy Safe Victoria that a flame safeguard system should be fitted to all enclosed burners as part of any conversion or refurbishing procedure, for example, commercial ovens, solid top hotplates and grill plates. The intent of this policy is to bring appliances up to minimum gas safety standards.

Exemption provision

Occasionally, it may be technically or economically prohibitive to fit a suitable flame safeguard system. In such instances, an exemption may be sought.

Any application for exemption should be addressed to:

The Manager, Complex Gas Appliance Safety
Energy Safe Victoria
PO Box 262
Collins Street West Victoria 8007

The application should include details of the appliance make, model and certification number (if available) together with a statement supporting why compliance with the policy would be technically or economically prohibitive. If identification of the appliance is difficult, it may be of assistance to include a photograph. Details of any proposed alternative method of providing an equivalent level of safety, such as explosion relief, should also be supplied.

Each application will be considered on its merits and any exemption granted will be appliance or site specific.

If further information is required, please phone the Gas Safety Technical Information Line on 1800 652 563.
