Electrical licences

ESV has compiled a list FAQs on electrical licensing. If your query is not addressed below, please contact us.

Please contact the Licensing Department via email at licensing@energysafe.vic.gov.au or phone on 1800 815 721.

You can change your contact details* online via ESVConnect.

  1. Go to esv.vic.gov.au/esvconnect/ and click on ESVConnect.
  2. Log on using your email address and password.
  3. Change your contact details:
    • Click on the coloured dot on the top right side of your account, and click on My Profile.
    • On your profile page, click on the grey pencil and pad symbol to update your contact details.
  4. Click on Submit to save your changes.

*Note: If you are an REC your contact information can only be updated by the nominated Business Supervisor via their ESVConnect profile.

ESV has ceased accepting paper-based applications. All applications must be made online via ESVConnect.

To apply for a Victorian electrical licence or Electrical Contractor’s Registration:

  1. Log into your ESVConnect profile.
  2. Click on the ‘My Applications’ tab on the left hand side.
  3. Select the type of licence/registration you wish to apply for and follow the prompts.

To find the status of your application contact the Licensing Department via email at licensing@energysafe.vic.gov.au or phone 1800 815 721.

To access your draft application:

  1. Log into your ESVConnect profile.
  2. Click on ‘My Applications’ on the left hand side and you will see the draft application under the heading ‘Drafts’.
  3. Select the application to continue where you left off or click on the rubbish bin icon to delete the draft.

To renew a Victorian electrical licence or REC registration:

  1. Log into your ESVConnect profile.
  2. Select the relevant licence or registration you wish to renew.
  3. Click on ‘Start Renewal’ in the top right hand section of the licence, or REC registration page
  4. Follow the prompts.

If your licence or REC registration is not renewed within 14 days* of the expiry date, you will need to contact the Licensing Department via email at licensing@energysafe.vic.gov.au or phone on 1800 815 721 for assistance.

*Note: Your renewal will now be subject to a reapplication at the higher prescribed licence/REC registration fee.

You may have created a new account on ESVConnect instead of upgrading your existing online services account. Contact the Licensing Department via email at licensing@energysafe.vic.gov.au or phone on 1800 815 721 for assistance.

Any work completed in Victoria, without a Victorian electrical licence is considered unlicensed work and a breach of the Electricity Safety (Registration and Licensing) Regulations 2010, irrespective of you holding a licence in another state.

Before you conduct electrical work in Victoria you must apply for an equivalent licence or registration in Victoria under Mutual Recognition. Further information can be found under Mutual Recognition Victoria.

Any work completed in Victoria, without a Victorian electrical licence is considered unlicensed work and a breach of the Electricity Safety (Registration and Licensing) Regulations 2010, irrespective of you holding a licence in another state.

Before you conduct electrical work in Victoria, you must apply for Automatic Mutual Recognition of an Interstate licence for licensed interstate electricians who do not permanently reside in Victoria.
